Carters lake April
Spring has sprung on Carters lake . March was very good to us in both weather conditions and quality fish . Lots of walleye and stripers came aboard last month as the night bite was hot . This month we are looking forward to the bait spawn. This annual event makes for great fishing everywhere but on this lake it is something else. The amount of bait spawning here is unmatched on any north ga lake . This will usually happen about the 2nd week in April but could be even earlier then that as the threadfin, alwwives ,and other assorted baits will spawn at different times. April is all about shallow fish for us. The walleye will be up ambushing baits on the shore line and on rocky shoals in the dark . For this we are throwing a variety of baits from crankbaits ,jerk baits, and soft plastics.Often these are oversized to make it stand out in the crowd . You need to be throwing these right in with the actively spawning baits and slowly pulled out to open water. Keep the noise and lights to a minimum for best results. The striper and hybrids won’t let all this bait go unnoticed either . Same scenario for catching them but we tend to stay with top water lures ,weightless flukes ,and even flutter spoons fished parallel to the rocky shore lines . In my opinion there’s not a more fun way to catch stripers then having them explode on a top water bait in the dark . If your a Fly fishing enthusiast April is a great time to target fish on this deep lake. Working the shore line with baitfish pattern streamers on floating lines can produce some great catches . For the daytime bite live baits are always an option . Fresh caught bait fished on light leaders will catch a variety species and later in the month will be our go to option. Planers ,down lines ,flat lines or pitching baits to feeding fish will all have a time and place this month . Look for striped fish in the 20 to 40ft range even less at dawn and dusk . As far as target areas the typical spring bites in Worley and Fisher creek will be consistent but if you’re not having any luck look in areas off the beaten path to find less pressured fish . These areas will be small pockets ,timber off the main lake and up river .
