The winter walleye bite has been flat out fantastic. The fish are packing on the pounds by packing down the alwives in most of the creeks . Lots of limits getting caught in the last few weeks with the average fish falling in the 19 to 22″ range . They fish still deep and pinned to the bottom . This makes them super opportunistic and sets up a good reaction bite . Spoons , jigs, blades ,or live bait fished right on their nose is a great way to put fish in the cooler. Don’t spend too much time on each fish. They are either gonna bite or deny your offering pretty quick . This bite can go on for hours or be a stop and go situation . Keep fishing and changing baits and it will pay off.
The striped bass are doing typical striped bass activities. Chasing bait under loons and eating lots of alewives seems to be their favorite this time of year. To get better acquainted with them pull some big fresh baits on planers early . Watch the sonar and always keep some baits ready to drop to deeper fish . There’s been some nice size fish caught 35 to 50ft after the sun gets up high and the surface bite slows. The U-rig bite has gotten some traction this week. Mini sizes are the go to for stripers and hybrids right now pulling them 2 to 3mph anywhere you see concentrations of bait.
